Is it common to not like people in general? To not have friends?

I like people good enough I suppose, but I don't really have friends. I have a few that are from my old town, but it took me 12 years to get to know them well. I live in a small isolated town in Canada and don't really know anyone and I like it that way. I go days with only seeing my kids. Than I have to go shopping or I see people on the beach where we walk. I am friendly and people seem to really like me. But I don't meet alot of people and I haven't dated for about 3 years. I just dont' trust people, I guess. I see my kids everyday, but other than that, it is me and the dog. I like it that way. In time I would like to make one or two really solid friendships and maybe hook up with a guy that is also a homebody. But for now, I don't have any friends really. I dont' really like the human race to much, although we get along. Is this common in the Western societies where individual and independance is more important than the group consencienes?
