What would cause a phone to still be able to select menu if the battery has just been taken out?

I want to pwn my friend with knowledge, so what would cause a phone to still be on and working fine if the battery has been taken out? I was thinking something like it has to do with an electrical charge or something, but I wanna know the real answer to this question, so as to lay down some knowledge.
