Does 50 glue sticks sound like alot for a kindergartener?

My son is starting school Friday and on the supply list it says to purchase 50 elmers glue sticks. I called the school and they said thats correct, but for all 15 kids in his cl to bring 50 each just sounds crazy to me. At the parent/ teacher meeting over the summer, she said they would use a glue stick a week, but they dont go to school for 50 weeks. Has anyone else had to purchase a crazy number of items for school? Or is this teacher just glue crazy? I feel sorry for him on the first day having to carry all those in his bookbag, it'll look silly.
